The other person did wrong and is the cause of the hostility.” For this reason, then, you first must go and be reconciled. Since you were not the cause of the hostility, neither be the cause of extending it further.
“But the other person is haughty.” If the other person’s ailment is both haughtiness and anger, then, because of these very things you ought to be the first to go to the other person. That person is in darkness, for darkness is anger and false pride. But you, the physician who is free from these and healthy, go to that sick person.
Does any physician say, “Because this person is sick, I don’t go to him”? No, this is especially the reason why a physician does go when a sick person is unable to come to him. For when sick persons are able to come, the physician assumes they are not extremely ill. But not so for those who lie at home sick. Are not pride and anger, don’t you think, worse than any illness? Is not the one like a severe fever and the other like a body swollen with inflammation? Go, extinguish the fire, because by the grace of God you can. Go, assuage the heat, as it were, with water.
“What if the other person becomes more upset by my doing this?” You have done your part. Let the other person take account for himself. Only, don’t let your conscience condemn you …. Go, not that you may heap coals of fire, but that the other person, knowing that future consequence for keeping up the enmity, may be appeased by your kindness. For you do not hurt the “hater” so much by showing your resentment as an enemy, as by doing good and showing kindness.
If the other person persists in keeping up the enmity when you are doing that person good and honoring that person and offering to be reconciled, that person has kindled the fire for himself or herself. You are guiltless.
